Lasik as we know today, was first developed and made possible by Jose Barraquer, an ophthalmologist who had discovered in his clinic one day in the 1950s that the cornea’s shape could be altered after cutting thin flaps

It was from this point he began researching how much of the cornea had to be left alone to provide stable results over the long-term.

The technique was later developed further by Svyatoslav Fyodorov in the 1970s. During this time developments were also made such as Radial keratotomy.

In the late 1960s the carbon-dioxide laser was being developed by scientists. The excimer laser was then borne. This laser was of great importance and in May 1973 Dr. Bhaumik publicised his team’s discovery and was later on given the legal right to sell this invention.

Eye surgery (known as refractive surgery) is carried out to improve the refractive state of the eye and the eye’s focusing ability.

LASIK was granted in 1989 for the first patient and was treated using a VISX laser by Dr. Marguerite B. MacDonald. The LASIK technique was successfully applied in other countries before it was practised in the USA.

Initial use of laser was to alter the shape of the cornea. The company Summit Technology,

first company to get FDA approval for an excimer laser to carry out photorefractive keratectomy in the United States. Subsequently the bending of the flap and photorefractive keratectomy became known as LASIK (an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) As LASIK provided immediate results (such as improved vision) it grew in popularity.

It has been said at some point in the future LASIK may be replaced by FLIVC (an acronym for Femtosecond laser intrastromal vision correction) to prevent and avoid permanently weakening the cornea with incisions.

Many people opt for lasik eye surgery as they are fed up of wearing spectacles or can’t be bothered with the hassle of inserting contact lenses on a daily basis. Reducing this dependency is a very attractive option for such individuals.

Laser eye surgery is used to correct many sight related problems and includes and is not limited to nearsightedness, farsightedness aswell as astigmatism.

Whilst wearing glasses is more obtrusive then wearing contacts, many find the possibility of potential 20/20 vision or even improved vision a good enough reason to go ahead with lasik eye surgery as wearing contacts can dry out the eyes and can cause discomfort if left in for too long.

Lasik eye surgery is on the rise but ofcourse as with any surgery on a delicate area such as the eye it is not deemed risk-free so it is recommended to consult a professional healthcare provider before making any decisions so you can decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

There are a number of factors to consider before deciding to whether or not to go ahead with laser eye surgery- this can be discussed with a healthcare professional whom you should consult first. Not all individuals are suitable candidates; this will be assessed in your consultation.

Choose an eye surgeon with a good reputation aswell as many years of experience is vital in improving the chances for a successful outcome

Whilst over the years LASIK has reached a more advanced stage which has led to a reduction in the risk of high visual impairment after surgery there are still concerns over the potential of LASIK to induce higher-order aberrations

A higher order aberration is defined as a visual problem. This includes and is not limited to starbursts, ghosting, halos, and double vision.

There is a connection between pupil size and aberrations. It is reported that the bigger the size of the pupil the higher the risk of an aberration.

Another side effect associated with higher-order aberrations induced by laser eye surgery is reduced contrast sensitivity. Keep in mind that “higher order” aberrations are not to be confused with Wavefront aberrations. And although the lure of perfect eyesight can seem nothing short of fantastic there are risks involved, no matter how small it is worth taking them into consideration.

Whilst the goal of lasik eye surgery is 20/20 vision this is not always the case and complications can arise. Dry eyes is said to be one of them which can result in eye drops needed on a long term basis. Serious complications such as losing your eyesight are said to be rare.

It is important that candidates see professional advice and are well informed before opting for laser eye surgery.

Laser eye surgery can correct vision problems such as blurriness as a result of short-sightedness/long-sightedness or astigmatism by reshaping the cornea.

There are different types of laser surgery available- lasik- being the most common.

Before you finalise your decision for laser surgery whether it be lasik or not, the rewards and risks must be taken into account as your eyes are very delicate and must be treated with care. Discussing your plans and your possible options with an eye doctor would be advisable before making any commitments so you are able to make an informed decision.

Potential candidates include people are long-sighted, short sighted or have an astigmatism.

Vision problems as a result of age may not be cured with lasik or with laser surgery in general as presbyopia is not do with the cornea shape.

As laser surgery will correct the shape of the cornea, vision is greatly improved. The success rate of laser surgery is said to be over 90% but this can vary according to location and can depend on a number of factors such as the level of experience the eye surgeon has, the quality of the surgeon, reputation of the clinic, etc..

The recovery period can be as short as a few days. Precautions will need to be taken such as avoiding rubbing the eyes, tinted glasses may be needed to avoid the glare of the sun and driving may be ruled out for a few week.

Lasik eye surgery is a type of surgery that is used to correct that is used to fix astigmatism, short sightedness and farsightedness and is performed using a laser.

What does LASIK stand for? Lasik stands for Laser-Assisted Stromal In-situ Keratomileusis. One of the main benefits is reported fast recovery. Lasik eye surgery is seen as a convenient alternative to wearing contacts or glasses.

The procedure is carried out on the patient when they are not asleep, sometimes sedatives may be used. A flap is created in the first stage and the cornea is then given a new form in the second stage. Lastly the flap is realigned.

What will Laser vision correction do? The procedure will usually eliminate the need for glasses or contacts or reduce dependency.

At the present time, the FDA has acknowledged laser vision correction for nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness however not every candidate is suitable. There are a number of factors that come into play such as the degree of nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness which will be established before Lasik eye surgery takes place. A history of medical conditions can also make a patient unsuitable for LASIK surgery. All potential candidates for laser eye surgery will be screened first.

Laser vision correction is said to be quick, completion taking less than one hour. You will be asked to focus your eyes on one point as your eyelids are held open, when this is finished you will be discharged and allowed to go home to rest.

Lasik eye surgery is FDA approved for anyone age 18 or over. The satisfaction range with Lasik eye surgery is said to be in the very high range of 92-98 percent worldwide.

With regards to post operative care are usually given special care with regards to antibiotics which is taken in the weeks following eye surgery. Precautions are also taken such as wearing goggles to prevent eye rubbing and to shield the eyes away from bright light.

The goal of Lasik surgery is to permanently change the shape of your cornea thereby improving vision and reducing dependency on glasses or contact lens

LASIK surgery typically takes 10-15 minutes for each eye. During the procedure an ultraviolet laser is used to remove excess tissue so the rays of light are focused clearly on the retina.

When the lens of the eye cannot refract light, blurriness results. Lasik surgery is more often used to treat this refractive error. More often patients who are nearsighted looking for a permanent solution opt for Lasik (nearsightedness is a common refractive defect of the eye) Farsightedness, aswell as astigmatism can also be treated but is less common for this type of treatment.

Whilst this type of eye surgery can give candidates the desired results it is important that all candidates discuss and weigh the potential rewards against the risks involved. The eyes are the most delicate area of your body. If you are happy with wearing contacts or glasses it is your doctor may recommend that you continue to do so.

The cost of lasik eye surgery has decreased over the years however there are still a range of factors that will affect the cost of this laser surgery.

Whether you are long/short sighted or have astigmatism the higher your prescription the more expensive it will be. An experienced eye surgeon in a reputable eye clinic will also charge more than a less experienced surgeon in a less reputable clinic.

Typically eye clinics who have a good success rate will also charge more, the location of the eye clinic also plays a role. Clinics in some major cities are more costly.

The actual lasik cost varies between $1000 per eye to $3000 per eye. $1000 is for the milder prescription and the cost will generally rise the higher the prescription.

If wavefront and intralase are added this may add another $1000 per eye. Both are said to increase the visual outcome giving better results.
